I ♡ LA

image

Realtalk - first time in LA was a little intimidating going into it. After spending almost a decade in a city as confined & immediate as Victoria, LA’s infamous immensity was a bit alarming.

But fret not! The one Sara Ajiri aka Warrior Princess aka bawse-gyal at 11:11 Agency to the rescue. Homegirl offered her couch for the duration of my stay… needless to say I owe her huge. I leave for San Diego today, but my LA stint has been a heartwarmer.

Mad love for 11:11, SamXL (keep your ears peeled for Pure Filth sound - album previews all week were amazing), Sweatson Klank & all the Angelinos I was blessed to meet this past week.

LOW END THEORY with Dabrye & residents

image

Well beyond words really. This whole West Coast tour has been an amazing trip so far, but there was no doubt that last night’s slot at Low End Theory was the most anticipated stop.

First off, getting to link with, play alongside & chill with Dabrye aka Tadd Mullinix has been a massive highlight of my … well, my life. I’ve been a Dabrye fan for a minute & watching him rock crowds with Detroit hip-hop, amorphous beats & some classics - all on vinyl - has been nothing short of inspiring. Despite Dabrye’s touring, I don’t think we can expect Three/Three next month or anything, but I was elated to hear Tadd say that he’s excited about making music right now.

Low End Theory. Crazy. The Airliner is a fascinating club… a lil’ grimey & the main room has just ridiculous sound. After soundcheck, there was a huuuuge lineup already forming at 8:30pm! Gaslamp opened (!) with some strange psych shit. Nobody & Daddy Kev rocked banging 808 beats (Dark Sky’s “Be Myself” was a highlight). Nocando & Subtitle got their freestyle on just before my set. Fuck they rippppped it. The quick mix format & short set lengths really keeps shit moving.

Aside form the intense communal vibe & crazy amount of producers in the building, the thing that impressed me the most was just how diverse the music is. Low End ends up playing less like “let’s hear a great DJ set from you” & more like “you’ve got 20 minutes, play as much heat as you can in that time”. SO it ran the gamut all night from weird loping psych wonk, to hefty dubstep, to classic hip-hop to… Drake. I think err’one except GLK played a tune from the new Drake - Nobody ended the night with “Crew Love”. Which is surprisingly fitting.

Huge out to Daddy Kev, Nobody, Gaslamp, Nocando, D-Styles, Dabrye, Hera, Sam XL & err’one that showed me any modicum of love. My heart swells.

Thanks so much. Cannot wait to come back ;)
